Ghasafar tal-passa

Illum disgha ta Marzu kellna ‘talk’ minn rapprezentant tal-Birdlife. Kellimna dwar l-ghasafar tal-passa. L-iktar dwar dawk li jghaddu minn fuq Malta. Semmejna hafna ghasafar fosthom: il-pitirrossi, il-huttafa u r-rundun. Tkellimna dwar il-perikli li jiltaqghu maghhom l-ghasafar waqt li jkunu qed jivjaggaw. Fost dawn il-perikli qalilna illi meta tkun kesha qawwija l-bahar jimtela bis-silg u meta jkun hemm l-ghasafar ma jkunux jistghu jixorbu u jistghu jmutu. Meta jkun hemm maltempati kbar fuq il-bahar tkun difficli hafna ghall-ghasafar biex itiru. Qalilna wkoll li wara hafna tahbit sabiex jaghmlu l-vjagg twil taghhom, meta jaslu fuq l-art jisparawlhom tal-kacca.

Ahna wkoll tkellimna dwar kif in-nies indunaw li l-ghasafar ipassu minn post ghall-iehor. Dan gara meta sabu ghasfur fl-Ewropa, li bl-Ingliz jghidulu ’stork’. Dan l-ghasfur kellu lanza ghaddejja minn go fih li b’xorti tajba ma qatlitux. Il-haga stramba kienet li din il-lenza kienet tintuza mill-Afrikani biss b’hekk indunaw li dan l-ghasfur tar mill-Afrika u wasal l-Ewropa.

Ahna hadna pjacir nisimghu dawn l-affarijiet ghax tghallimna xi haga gdida u hija haga mportanti illi nisimghu dwar l-ghasafar u nghallmu lil ta amdwarna biex ma nahqruhom!

Ir-Riserva Naturali

L-Erbgħa 25 ta’  Marzu ħriġna ħarġa ma’ ta’ l-iskola. Morna naraw ir-riserva naturali fejn kien hemm ħafna annimali. L-ewwel post li morna kien ġo kamra fejn ħadna xi informazjoni fuq l-annimali.

Ġo din ir-riserva teżisti tip ta’ ħuta li jisimha il-Bużaqq. Din tkun żgħira daqs ċentimetru. Tiekol il-ħaxix ta’ taħt l-ilma u ġieli tiekol iż-żgħar  tagħha. L-iżjed tip ta’ papra li daħħkitna kienet it-tiġieġa tal-baħar. Din tkun sewda kollha, denbha għall-ponta u għandha linja ħamra.

Wara li lestejna u tkellimna fuq l-annimali morna nfittxuhom. L-ewwel insett li sibna kien il-kamalejonte  li kien qalb il- busbies. Meta komplejna mexjin il-gwida beda jgħidilna li l-ilma ma jinxifx. Wara morna f’post sabiħ fejn kien hemm għadira li ġo fiha kien hemm  gambli u dud . Meta konna mexjin harisna  lejn iz-zkuk u rajna ġurat. Rajna Flamingo. Il-gwida qalilna li l-Flamingo meta jdaħħal rasu fl-ilma jibda jiżfen. Meta erġajna lura l-iskola qgħadna npengu xi għasfur.

Animal Habitats - The Sea

title-sea

About three quarters of the earth is covered by sea. Oceans are divided into numerous regions depending on the physical and biological conditions of these areas. The area of the World Ocean is 361 million square kilometers. In shallow parts of the sea the light reaches all the way to the bottom while in the deep sea, the light only reaches the top part of the sea. In the sea there is zooplankton (tiny fish) and phytoplankton (tiny sea grass). These are the food that the fish eat.

Many types of fish live in the sea. Some birds live near the sea and eat fish and there are also some mammals that live in the sea.

     slide14

Dolphins are mammals  that   are  completely  adapted  to live in  the water and  never  leave  it. Dolphins live in tropical, subtropical and warm seas all over the world. Sometimes they  come at  the water` s  surface  to  breathe .Their  body  is  hydrodynamic in  shape, the  front  legs have  been   changed into flippers and at  end  of  the  body there is a caudal fin. They  swim  and  dive  excellently , and  feed  on  fish  and  cephalopods .The  common  dolphin is a  social  species. They  gather  in  large   schools  that  live  in  the  open  sea. They swim fast, and also perform   different acrobatics. Dolphins have one child each and they teach and discipline their child. Dolphins communicate by using different sounds.

Whales are large, aquatic mammals. They breathe air through blowhole(s) into lungs (unlike fish who breathe using gills). Whales have sleek, streamlined bodies that move easily through the water. They are the only mammals, other than manatees, that live their entire lives in the water, and the only mammals that have adapted to life in the open oceans

Like all mammals:

  • Whales breathe air into lungs,
  • Whales have hair (although they have a lot less than land mammals, and have almost none as adults),
  • Whales are warm-blooded (they maintain a high body temperature),
  • Whales have mammary glands with which they nourish their young,
  • Whales have a four-chambered heart.

The biggest whale is the blue whale, which grows to be about 94 feet (29 m) long - the height of a 9-story building. These enormous animals eat about 4 tons of tiny krill each day. Adult blue whales have no predators except man.

 Starfish

Starfishes are the typical inhabitants of the sea bottom in shallow areas. The orange starfish especially likes sandy bottoms. Its body is flat, and there are five arms extending from the central part of it. In the middle of its body, on the bottom side, there is a mouth opening, and on the upper there is a small screen plate through which the water comes in. On the arms there are tube feet, which are used for moving along the sea floors. The orange starfish are carnivores, and they mostly feed on shells and snails. The orange starfish lives in the Mediterranean Sea. If the prey is small, they swallow it at once, and if it is bigger, they avert their stomach through their mouth and digest the prey outside the body. For separating the shells of molluscs they also use the tube feet on their arms. Individual starfish are male or female. From the fertilised eggs, larvae come on the ground and transform into adult starfish.

 seahorse-title

The sea horse lives in the sea. The sea horse is unlike large and fast offshore fish. The seahorse manages to cross only 4 mm a second.

On the ventral side of male’s body there is a brood pouch into which a female inserts her eggs with a special organ. The male fertilises them and carries them in his brood pouch for 2 or 3 weeks. After hatching, the parents do not take care of the young anymore.

The Tundra Desert - The cold Desert

The Tundra Desert

The Tundra is the snow fields that are found at the North and South Poles and it also includes the world’s highest mountain peaks. In the tundra desert the temperature is very cold, it rarely rains and there the wind is very strong. The lowest temperature on Earth has been recorded there, at -89 degrees Celsius. There only the first living organisms can be found and these are mostly lichens. Animals that live in the Tundra are the penguins, the polar bear, the snowy owl and the arctic fox.

Snow Owls

Owls are fierce, meat-eating birds. Owls are found all over the world, except for the frozen Antarctic and some remote islands. Some owls feed on small mammals such as mice and rats. Many owls live in wooded areas but others are found in grassland, deserts or wet marshland. Snowy owls are good parents. They will attach any predator that comes near, even a wolf. A male snowy owl shows off to attract a female. A male will even give his new mate givens of food. Owls are very quiet fliers. Soft fringes on the edges of an owls wing feathers hell it to fly silently.

The polar bears live in the Artic. Despites their enormous size, polar bear are capable of swimming and diving well and fast. They row with their front feet and use their hind ones for stabilisation. The fur layer fills with air and makes their bodies lighter and helps them float. The main share of the polar bear’s prey consists of   seals and walruses. It hunts for them on   land and in the sea. It hunts the seals by sneaking up slowly and running at the end, or by watching besides a hole in the ice and catching a seal as it peeps out to breathe.

Animal Habitats - The Hot Desert

slide2

We could expect that there is no life in rough and inhospitable areas such as deserts. They are dry, often very hot, of scarce vegetation and covered with rocks or movable sand.

                   fennec-fox_1           gilamonster

The temperature in most deserts is extremely high during the day, and it falls rapidly during the night. There is almost no precipitation, so in some deserts rain falls only once or twice in a century during severe storms.

But some animals survive even in such extremely rough conditions. There are not many animals and plants that can endure the heat during the day. .Animals spend the days mostly hidden in holes under the rocks or underground. The ones that can also spend the day in open areas have special adaptations that allow this. Animals that live in the deserts are the Gila Monster, the Fennec, the Meerkat, the Camel, the Viper and the Jerboa..

However, deserts also exist in North and South America and in Asia.

Where do they live?

Earth supports many different habitats, each of which has distinct features and distinct plant and animal populations.

We are learning about different animals and their habitats.
